Title:Senior Accountant - Township of Esquimalt

SENIOR ACCOUNTANT

Located adjacent to downtown Victoria, Esquimalt is a residential community (population 17,000) with extensive amenities including beautiful parks and beaches, scenic waterfront walkways as well as modern recreational facilities, schools and commercial services.

The Financial Services Department is seeking a Senior Accountant for a regular, full time position. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Financial Services, the Senior Accountant will have the responsibility to perform senior level accounting functions related to financial planning and reporting, internal control, and business process improvement.

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Assist in the development of the five year financial plan including capital program planning and reserve fund management
  • Develop and prepare revenue, expenditure and capital forecasts and budgets
  • Develop, prepare and distribute monthly reports to internal clients providing guidance and interpretation, analyse variances and prepare monthly variance reports
  • Develop and prepare annual financial statements and all required working papers and documentation
  • Maintain the financial reporting system and recommend processes to preserve the integrity of financial data
  • Manage the chart of accounts, ensuring its structure accurately represents the business needs of the Township and the flow of financial data is effective
  • Supervise the development of internal control data by managing the documentation and evaluation of business processes 
  • Provide control expertise during the development of new business processes 
  • Analyze and interpret various accounting, purchasing and maintenance management information and data and assess the impact on tangible capital asset valuation and related matters
  • Identify, report and assist in resolving situations of non-compliance with established financial procedures 
  • Provide advice, direction, and high quality customer service to external and internal clients; provide expertise to external clients regarding financial procedures and controls

The ideal candidate will be a team player with strong professional ethics. We are looking for someone with an Accounting Designation plus 3 to 5 years of progressive experience in a municipal or public sector environment. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, including an ability to maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers, are a must. Candidates should possess knowledge of business and capital planning, financial reporting and internal control.

Salary range: $37.30 – $40.27 per hour
